Choosing a surgeon is one of the most important parts of knee replacement. The operation is planned around your knee, your health and your daily life, so it helps to meet the surgeon, ask questions and feel comfortable with the answers before you decide. This guide lists practical things to look for and ask. It does not rank doctors or promise any result.
Start with the basics
- Specialty. Look for a qualified orthopaedic surgeon who regularly treats knee and hip problems. You can ask what proportion of the practice is joint care.
- Registration. Doctors in India are registered with a medical council. It is reasonable to ask for the registration details and check them.
- Experience with your type of problem. Ask how often the surgeon performs the operation you may need, whether that is a total, partial or revision replacement.
Look at how the consultation feels
A good consultation is unhurried. The doctor listens to your story, examines the knee, reviews your X-rays or scans and explains what they see in plain language. Be cautious if you feel pushed toward surgery before other options have been discussed. Many people with knee pain improve with exercise, weight management, walking aids or medicines, and a surgeon should be willing to explain these first.
Questions worth asking
- What is wrong with my knee, and how did you reach that conclusion?
- Do I need surgery now, or can I try other treatment first?
- What type of knee replacement do you suggest for me, and why?
- What are the risks and possible complications for someone with my health?
- What will happen before surgery, in hospital and afterwards?
- What does physiotherapy involve, and who will guide it?
- Who do I contact if I have a problem after I go home?
Questions about technology
Some surgeons use computer or robotic assistance. These systems help with planning and placing the implant, but the surgeon still makes the decisions. It is fair to ask which system is used, how long the surgeon has used it, and whether it is suitable for your knee. Technology is one factor. The surgeon's judgement and the care team around you matter just as much.
Think about the hospital and aftercare
- Is the hospital convenient for you and your family to visit?
- What facilities are available if something unexpected happens?
- Is physiotherapy available in hospital and near your home?
- Are follow-up visits easy to arrange?
Understand the costs before you decide
Ask for a written estimate that explains what is included, such as the implant, hospital stay, anaesthesia and follow-up. If you have health insurance, check what it covers. You can read more in our guide to what affects the cost of knee and hip replacement in Pune.
Take your time, and consider a second opinion
Knee replacement is usually a planned operation, so you can take time to decide. Asking for a second opinion is common and sensible. A good surgeon will understand. Our article on when to consider knee replacement surgery may help you think through the timing.
